Bereavement Allowance

A weekly allowance paid to bereaved spouses or civil partners (replaced by Bereavement Support Payment for new claims).

The original Bereavement Allowance was a weekly tax-free benefit for bereaved spouses or civil partners aged 45 or over. It was replaced by the Bereavement Support Payment for deaths from 6 April 2017 onwards — a lump-sum-plus-monthly-payments scheme.

The Bereavement Support Payment is tax-free and not means-tested.
